Resumen

La abolición de la esclavitud, junto con el ascenso de la República en Brasil, generó una coyuntura en la que una parte de la elite en el poder y de la intelectualidad, percibieron que era necesario generar nuevas fórmulas de diferenciación al interior de la sociedad. De ahí que las teorías raciales tuvieran gran aceptación y que diversos proyectos fueran implementados con el propósito de “blanquear” a la población brasileña. A lo anterior, hay que agregar la interpretación que los gobernantes republicanos e intelectuales generaron en torno al positivismo y al progreso. Todo lo cual permitió que enfoques como el higienismo, pero en especial la eugenesia, tuvieran como principales objetivos de sus acciones al pobre y en particular al negro. De tal forma que la República no sólo acentuó la jerarquización en las relaciones sociales, sino que además profundizó los prejuicios en contra de los negros. Lo anterior no ocurrió sin reacciones y sobresaltos, tanto de los directamente afectados contra las diversas medidas adoptadas, como de parte de otros científicos que no compartían dichas premisas.

Abstract

The abolition of slavery, together with the emergence of the republic in Brazil, created a conjuncture where part of the elite in power and the intellectualsrealized that it was necessary to generate new forms of differentiation within the society. Hence, racial theories were widely accepted and many projects were implemented with the purpose of “whitening” the Brazilian population. To the latter we must add the interpretation the republican rulers and intellectuals made of the ideas of positivism and progress. As a result, approaches such as “Hygienism”, but particularly Eugenics, had as the main objectives of their actions the poor and especially the black. Therefore, the republic not only emphasized the hierarchical social relations, but also deepened the prejudice against the black population. This was not without surprises and reactions both by those directlyaffectedagainst the variousmeasures taken,as by other scientistswho did not sharethese premises.
